Rolex Submariner
Deep Security

The Oyster Perpetual Submariner and Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date, the archetypes of the diver’s watch, represent the historic connection between Rolex and the world of underwater exploration. Introduced in 1953, the Submariner was the first diver’s wristwatch to be waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). The Submariner Date, which displays the date in addition to the time, was launched in 1969. The waterproofness of both models was subsequently increased to 300 metres (1,000 feet). Thanks to their renowned robustness, they have long since moved beyond the “water” element with which they were associated since their inception and have also conquered dry land, establishing themselves as the watches of choice for the most diverse activities and sports.

The perfect design for a dive watch

Given the fundamental role of the Submariner for survival during dives, every detail of its design has been studied to meet the practical needs of divers. Over time, the model has evolved technically and has been enhanced with elements that have improved its overall functionality.

With its 41 mm Oyster case, the exclusive dial with large, luminescent hour markers and hands, the unidirectional rotatable bezel, and the Oyster bracelet, the Submariner and Submariner Date are among the most recognizable watches ever made. One of the key elements of their strong visual identity is the graduated Cerachrom bezel insert, made of high-tech ceramic, which offers essential functionality. Its 60-minute graduation can provide the diver with an accurate indication of dive times.

Reliable, durable, and functional

The Oyster case of the Submariner and Submariner Date is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 300 meters. The Triplock winding crown, fitted with a triple waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case, ensuring maximum water resistance.

Designed to be both robust and comfortable, the Oyster bracelet is equipped with an Oysterlock safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening, and the Rolex Glidelock extension system, which allows for precise adjustment of the bracelet length without the need for any tools.

Superlative Chronometer Certification

Like all Rolex watches, the Submariner and Submariner Date are certified as Superlative Chronometers. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by a green seal and is coupled with a five-year international guarantee.

Conquering the Ocean Depths

The Submariner was designed specifically for underwater exploration and diving. Immediately after its completion in the Rolex workshops, the watch became an instant success among pioneering deep-sea diving professionals who were asked to test the model. One such trailblazer was Dimitri Rebikoff, a French engineer and underwater photographer. In his 1953 report, Rebikoff wrote that he had achieved particularly brilliant results during testing: "We can confirm that this watch has not only provided the utmost satisfaction in extremely difficult diving conditions, which are particularly taxing on the equipment used, but has also proven to be an indispensable aid for any dive with a self-contained breathing apparatus."
