An authentic tool-watch, it has undergone constant evolution to offer increasingly cutting-edge technical performance. In 1982, Rolex introduced a new caliber that allowed the hour hand to be set independently of the minute hand and the 24-hour hand. To emphasize this development, the model equipped with the optimized movement was named GMT-Master II.
Rolex GMT-Master II
The time zones that matter
The Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II was designed to simultaneously display the time in two time zones. Robust and functional, it is the perfect timepiece for women and men who travel the world. The GMT-Master, introduced in 1955, was a privileged witness to the development of intercontinental travel from the second half of the 20th century. It even became the official watch of Pan American World Airways, then the leading US international airline.
The Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II, as its functions and name suggest, immediately evokes the world of long-haul travel and time zones.
One tool, multiple time zones
The design of the GMT-Master II is instantly recognizable thanks to its graduated two-colour bezel insert – where the lower half symbolizes daytime hours and the upper half, nighttime hours – with various colour combinations. The GMT-Master II, with its traditional display of hours, minutes, and seconds hands, a 24-hour hand with a triangular tip, and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a 24-hour graduated Cerachrom insert, allows for the simultaneous reading of two time zones: local time and reference time, or local time and the time of another time zone.
The latest generation GMT-Master II is equipped with calibre 3285, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. The quintessence of Rolex technology, it ensures high performance in terms of precision, power reserve, comfort of use, and reliability. It features the exclusive blue Parachrom hairspring and includes the patented Chronergy escapement. This movement boasts a power reserve of approximately seventy hours.
High-tech ceramics
The Cerachrom bezel insert is crafted by Rolex from a single block of extremely resistant ceramic. These high-tech materials are virtually scratch-proof and maintain their vibrant colors over time. In 2013, Rolex marked a turning point in the use of ceramic in watchmaking by introducing a two-color monobloc ceramic insert in blue and black. A year later, the brand unveiled a red and blue Cerachrom insert – the colors of the original GMT-Master. To develop a red ceramic that met its aesthetic and quality criteria, the brand conducted unprecedented and innovative research.
Over the years, Rolex has introduced other color combinations: brown and black in 2018, green and black in 2022 – in a version with the winding crown and crown guards positioned on the left side of the case and the date display at 9 o'clock – and gray and black in 2023. In 2025, Rolex presented its first-ever ceramic dial on the GMT-Master II. The dial is made in the same green as the lower half of the two-color green and black Cerachrom bezel insert that the watch is equipped with.
Superlative Chronometer Certification
Like all Rolex watches, the GMT-Master II holds Superlative Chronometer certification. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolised by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch, along with a five-year international guarantee.
