Rolex Deepsea and
Deepsea Challenge
Extreme divers' watches

The watches in the Deepsea range demonstrate Rolex’s unique know-how in terms of waterproofness and resistance to underwater pressure. Symbols of the brand’s long history with underwater explorers, the Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea and the Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge are ultra-resistant professional divers’ watches. They are waterproof to a depth of 3,900 meters for the Rolex Deepsea, launched in 2008, and 11,000 meters for the Deepsea Challenge, introduced in 2022.

Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea

The Rolex Deepsea meets the highest expectations of professional divers in terms of resistance to underwater pressure, precision, and reliability, while also displaying the aesthetic codes and fundamental characteristics of the Professional watches in the Oyster Perpetual collection.

Upon its launch, this diver's watch designed for great depths introduced the Ringlock system, an innovative case architecture that allows it to withstand the pressure at extreme depths. Its 44 mm Oyster case is equipped with the helium escape valve.

The Rolex Deepsea in Oystersteel is available with a choice of an intense black or Dblue dial. It features a unidirectional rotatable bezel with a graduated black Cerachrom insert. In 2024, the brand introduced an 18 ct yellow gold version with a blue dial and a blue Cerachrom bezel insert.

Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge

The Deepsea Challenge not only confirms Rolex's legitimacy as a pioneering brand in the field of deep-sea diving watches, but also its expertise in terms of water resistance and underwater pressure resistance.

The 50 mm diameter timepiece is an adaptation of the Rolex Deepsea Challenge, the experimental watch that accompanied filmmaker and explorer James Cameron during his descent into the Mariana Trench in 2012, attached to the outside of the submersible.

Crafted from RLX titanium, the Deepsea Challenge is available with an intense black dial and features a unidirectional rotating bezel with a graduated black ceramic Cerachrom insert.

Ringlock System

Rolex's patented Ringlock system is found in the Brand's dive watches designed for extreme depths, the Rolex Deepsea and the Deepsea Challenge. Furthering research into the Oyster's waterproof properties, this system consists of a reinforced case architecture that combines a thick, slightly domed sapphire crystal, a high-performance compression ring, and an RLX titanium case back.

The compression ring is made of nitrogen-enriched steel for the Rolex Deepsea in Oystersteel and for the Deepsea Challenge; it is made of blue high-tech ceramic – a first for this component – for the 18 ct yellow gold version of the Rolex Deepsea.

Helium escape valve

The Oyster case of both models is also equipped with the helium escape valve patented in 1967, which acts as a safety device in the brand’s dive watches designed for great depths. This system allows the excess pressure accumulated in the case to escape during decompression in a hyperbaric chamber following saturation diving, without compromising the case’s waterproofness.

Strict waterproof testing

Scuba diving demands absolute reliability and safety. The waterproofness of every Rolex Deepsea and Deepsea Challenge watch is tested with a 25% safety margin, in accordance with the current standard for diving watches.

The Rolex Deepsea, guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 3,900 meters, is therefore subjected to the pressure found at 4,875 meters, while the Deepsea Challenge, waterproof to 11,000 meters, is subjected to the pressure exerted at a depth of 13,750 meters.

To conduct these rigorous tests, the Brand developed a specific hyperbaric chamber for the Rolex Deepsea and an ultra-high-pressure tank for the Deepsea Challenge, in collaboration with Comex (Compagnie Maritime d’Expertises), the prestigious French company specializing in underwater engineering and hyperbaric technologies.

Superlative Chronometer Certification

Like all Rolex timepieces, the Deepsea range is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification. This designation guarantees that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolised by a green seal that comes with a five-year international guarantee.
